β Biography
Esther was a Jewish orphan raised by her cousin Mordecai in Susa. She was chosen as Queen by King Ahasuerus (Xerxes). When Haman plotted to destroy all Jews in the empire, Mordecai called for fasting and Esther risked approaching the king unsummoned, saying 'If I perish, I perish.' She revealed her Jewish identity and Haman's plot. Haman was executed and the Jews were saved. Esther's feast (Purim) commemorates this deliverance.
