Benedict Joseph Labre was born in 1748 in Saint-Maurice, Belgium. After brief attempts to join religious orders, he embarked on a life of wandering pilgrimage, living as a mendicant throughout Europe. He made multiple pilgrimages to Rome, where he would spend winters in St. Peter's Basilica and summers wandering French countryside. Known for his extreme asceticism, joy, and devotion to the Eucharist, he never joined a religious order yet lived the religious life more perfectly than most. He died in 1783 at the French hospital in Rome and was canonized by Pope John Paul II in 1981. He is the patron saint of the homeless and beggars.
