Born Francis de Sales on Aug 21, 1567 in Thorens, Savoy, to a noble family. Originally intended for a military career, he had a conversion experience after a rock fell near him during a trip, which he took as a sign to enter the priesthood. Studied at Paris and Padua, ordained in 1593. Appointed Bishop of Geneva (actually residing in Annecy since Geneva was Protestant) in 1602. Known for his gentle, charitable approach to re-converting Protestants rather than force. Wrote 'Introduction to the Devout Life' (1608)—a guide to holiness for people living in the world, not just religious. Co-founded the Visitation Order with St Jane Frances de Chantal in 1610, designed for women who wanted religious life but were too young or weak for austerity. Said: 'Waste not even scornful words, for you may spend what you have laid up for eternity.' His feast day, Jan 24, is the patronal feast of journalists. Died Dec 28, 1622 in Lyon. Canonized in 1665. Doctor of the Church (1877). Patron of writers and journalists.
