Born Dec 9, 1579 in Lima, Peru, to a Spanish nobleman father and a freed African-Colombian mother. Illegitimate, he was sent to a boarding school for barber-surgery at age 12. At 15, he joined the Dominican convent of St. Nicholas in Lima as a brother (not priest, due to his mixed race). Known as the 'Angel of the Poor'—he cared for the sick, fed the hungry, and sheltered the homeless. His cell was filled with animals he rescued—dogs, cats, birds, rats—and legend says they all lived in harmony. He mixed a salve from beeswax, olive oil, and egg whites that healed wounds miraculously. During a plague, he cared for the sick and buried the dead. When asked why he helped everyone equally, he said: 'All men are made in the image of God.' Died Jul 3, 1639 at age 59. Canonized in 1962 by John XXIII—the first Latino, first person of color, and first former servant canonized. Patron of social justice, mixed-race people, and animals.
