β Biography
Born c.1805 in Chavara, Kerala, India. A member of the Saint Thomas Christians (Syro-Malabar Church). Ordained priest in 1829. Founded the first religious congregation of indigenous priests in Indiaβthe Carmelite Brothers of Yarumala (1831) and the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary (1834). Established schools, printing presses, and orphanages across Kerala. Promoted education for all castes and genders. Introduced the printing press to Malayalam literature. Reformed the Syro-Malabar Church and strengthened its connection to Rome. Died Jan 4, 1871 at age 66. Beatified in 1995, canonized in 2014 by Francis. First saint canonized from India's Syro-Malabar Church. He founded the Carmelites of Mary Immaculate (CMI) congregation in 1831, the first indigenous religious congregation in India.
