✝ Biography
Born Giovanni Battista Montini on Sep 26, 1897 in Concesio, Italy. Ordained priest in 1920. Entered the Vatican diplomatic service, serving as nuncio to Hungary. Made Secretary of State by John XXIII in 1961. Elected Pope on Jun 21, 1963. Presided over the Second Vatican Council (1962-65), which modernized the Church—opening the windows as John XXIII had intended. Promulgated groundbreaking documents: 'Gaudium et Spes' (Church in the Modern World), 'Nostra Aetate' (Relations with Non-Christian Religions), and 'Humanae Vitae' (On the Regulation of Birth, 1968). Made historic visits: first papal visit to the UN (1965), Lourdes (1965), Jerusalem (1964)—where he met Patriarch Athenagoras and ended the 900-year excommunication between Rome and Constantinople. Died Aug 6, 1978. Canonized in 2018 by Francis.
