β Biography
Born Isidore the Plowman 1582 in MombeltrΓ‘n, near Madrid, Spain. Illiterate peasant laborer who worked the fields as a sharecropper. Despite his humble station, he was renowned for his pietyβpraying before work, making the sign of the cross over the fields, and giving alms from his meager wages. His wife Maria de la Cabeza was equally devout. Miracles were attributed to him: angels plowed his fields while he prayed at Mass, a wolf carried his lunch, and wells sprang up at his prayer. When a lord demanded extra work, Isidore prayed and angels completed the labor. The lord, witnessing this, converted and gave Isidore money, which Isidore gave to the poor. The lord returned in anger, but found the money replaced by gold coinsβGod's reward for Isidore's charity. Died May 15, 1130. Canonized in the 15th century. Patron of farmers, agricultural workers, and the humble.
