Begins Divine Mercy visions
β Biography
Born Helena Kowalska on Aug 25, 1905 in Glogowiec, Poland. Entered the Congregation of the Merciful Saviour of Souls (Mericiaries) in Warsaw in 1925, taking the religious name Sister Maria of the Holy Face, later known as Faustina (Festival of Divine Mercy). From 1931-1938 she received extensive revelations from Jesus about Divine Mercy, recorded in her diary (600 pages, 340 numbered entries). Jesus instructed her to have an image painted with the rays red and pale, inscribed: 'Jesus, I trust in You.' Established the Feast of Divine Mercy on the first Sunday after Easter. Promised: 'On that day I open the wide gates of My Mercy. All souls without exception will have access to the wellspring of My grace.' The diary also contains messages about the Chaplet of Divine Mercy and the Hour of Great Mercy (3 PM). Persecuted by Nazi authorities, transferred to Krakow where she died of tuberculosis on Oct 5, 1938 at age 33. Her diary was published in 1943 in Polish. Canonized in 2000 by Pope John Paul II, who established the Feast of Divine Mercy for the universal Church. The Divine Mercy image is venerated worldwide.
