CAMILLUS de LELLIS (St) Founder.
R.M. July 18 1550-1614. A born in Treviso in central Italy, who after some years of soldiering, tried to join the Capuchins, but had to leave them on account of a disease of the feet, which proved incura- ble. Ultimately he found his vocation in the service of the sick, for whom he founded the nursing congregation of the Ministers of the Sick, approved in 1591. Before this, St Camillus had been ordained priest by Thomas Goldwell of St Asaph, the last English bishop of the old_ hierarchy. Canonized in 1746, and declared by Leo XIII patron saint of the sick and of their nurses.
