β Biography
Born Jul 25, 1850 in Sant'Angelo Lodigiano, near Milan, Italy. From age 4 she dreamed of going to America as a missionary. Entered the Poor Clarisses but was expelled due to tuberculosis. Founded the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in 1877βthe first religious congregation of women in Italy dedicated to missions. Came to the United States in 1889 at the invitation of Bishop Harkins of Chicago to care for Italian immigrants. Despite language barriers and opposition, she founded 67 institutions across the Americasβschools, hospitals, orphanages, and homes for the aged. In New York she established a hospital, college, and multiple schools. Naturalized as American citizen in 1909. Died Nov 13, 1917 in Chicago at age 67. Canonized in 1946 by Pius XII. First American citizen saint. Patron of immigrants.
