✝ Biography
Benedict of Aniane (also known as Benedict of Nursia the Younger) was a Frankish monk and influential monastic reformer born around 751 in Languedoc, of Visigothic descent. He founded the abbey of Aniane in 780 and became one of the most important monastic reformers of the Carolingian era. He advised Charlemagne on monastic matters and was instrumental in promoting the Rule of St. Benedict as the standard for all monasteries in the Frankish Empire. He convened synods that standardized monastic practice and compiled collections of canonical texts. He died in 821 while on a journey to Rome.
