Born Sep 31, 1858 in Strasbourg, France, to an aristocratic military family. Had a dissipated youth—drinking, womanizing, and debt. Joined the French army in 1882, served in Algeria and Indochina. Had a religious conversion in 1886 after encountering a crucifix. Entered the seminary, ordained priest in 1896. Joined the White Fathers and was sent to the Sahara in 1901. Established a hermitage near Tamazret, Algeria, living among the Tuareg Berbers. Lived in extreme poverty, learning their language and customs. Wrote 'A Word of Solitude'—spiritual reflections on the Beatitudes. Emphasized 'horizontal charity'—love for one's neighbors as the path to God. Assassinated on Dec 1, 1916 at age 58 by Arab bandits who stole his meager possessions. Canonized in 2022 by Pope Francis. Patron of desert missionaries and those seeking conversion. He served in the French army from 1874-1876, including in Algeria. After a youthful life of dissipation, he experienced a profound religious conversion in 1886 when he knelt before the Blessed Sacrament in a church in Carthage.
