✝ Biography

Born Karol Jozef Wojtyla on May 18, 1920 in Wadowice, Poland. His father was a non-commissioned officer; his mother, brother, and father all died before he turned 21. Ordained priest on Oct 1, 1946 by Cardinal Adam Stefanie Ski, secretly during German occupation of Krakow. Earned a doctorate in philosophy on St Augustine's doctrine of the state. Made bishop of Kulom in 1958, Archbishop of Krakow in 1963, and Cardinal in 1967. Elected Pope on Oct 16, 1978, the first non-Italian pope in 455 years. As Pope John Paul II, he traveled to 129 countriesβ€”the most itinerant pope in history. Authored 14 encyclicals, 15 apostolic exhortations, and 13 books. The 'Theology of the Body'β€”129 lectures on human love and sexualityβ€”remains influential. Played a key role in ending communism in Eastern Europe, inspiring Solidarity in Poland. Survived an assassination attempt by Mehmet Ali Agca on May 13, 1981 at Fatima's feast day. Beatified 1,340 saints and beatified 1,338 blessedsβ€”more than all previous popes combined. πŸ“– Redemptor Hominis

On the Redemption of Man

Man can be redeemed only by the Face of God, made visible in the incarnate Son of God. The Redeemer of man is the Face of the Father's mercy and love. He is the Face of God who draws near to man, who becomes man, who suffers for man, who dies for man, who rises for man.
β€” St. John Paul II
πŸ“– Crossing the Threshold of Hope

On the Church

The Church is the sacrament of salvation, the sign and instrument of the unity of the human race. She is the body of Christ, the temple of the Holy Spirit, the people of God. She is the mother of all believers, the teacher of all nations, the bride of Christ.
