✝ Biography
Born Mar 9, 1811 in Chorzewitz, Bohemia (Czech Republic). Ordained priest in 1836. Traveled to the United States in 1837, learning English on the ship. Joined the Redemptorists in 1838. Became a renowned preacher—preached in English, German, and Czech. Appointed Vicar General of Philadelphia in 1843, consecrated Bishop of Brooklyn in 1849, transferred to Philadelphia in 1852. Established the first Catholic diocesan school system in the US—132 schools by his death. Founded the first Catholic theological seminary in the US (St. Charles Borromeo Seminary). Wrote hymns and catechisms. Died Jan 5, 1860 at age 48. Canonized in 1977 by Paul VI. First born-in-North-America saint (though born in Bohemia, he is considered the first US saint). Patron of Catholic educators and broadcasters. He became a missionary in the United States and served as the fourth Bishop of Philadelphia, where he established schools and parishes for immigrant communities.
