✝ Biography
Born c.1170 in Caleruega, Castile, Spain, to a noble family. Entered the Canons Regular of Saint Stephen at the Cathedral of Osma at age 15. Ordained priest c.1201. Accompanied Bishop Diego of Osma on a mission to convert the Cathars in southern France, where he was shocked by the poverty and ignorance of the local clergy. Founded the Order of Preachers (Dominicans) in 1216 at Prouille, France, with the purpose of preaching penance and combating heresy. The order's rule emphasized poverty, study, and preaching. Dominic established the practice of preaching in public squares (place preaching). Founded the convent of St Sixtus in Rome (1219) and the studium generale at Paris. Known for promoting the Rosary. Died August 6, 1221 in Bologna at age 51. Canonized in 1234 by Pope Gregory IX. His order became one of the most influential in the Church, producing Thomas Aquinas, Catherine of Siena, and many cardinals and popes.
