Born John Melchior Bosco on Aug 16, 1815 at Becchi, Castelnuovo d'Asti, Piedmont, son of a peasant. His mother Margherita raised him alone after his father died when he was two. Had visions from age nine that guided his mission. Ordained priest on Jun 17, 1841 at age 26. Devoted his life to orphaned and abandoned youth in Turin's slums. Founded the Salesians of Don Bosco (Societas Sancti Francisci Xaverii de Salesio) in 1859—'the Society of St Francis de Sales.' His preventive system of education: 'Reason, Religion, and Loving Kindness'—rather than punishment. Built oratories, schools, and workshops that housed thousands of boys. Founded the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians for girls in 1872 with Maria Domenica Mazzarello. By his death, the Salesians had 72 houses with 616 members and served over 5,000 young people. Wrote dozens of books, including his autobiography 'Memoirs of the Oratory.' Died Jan 31, 1888. Canonized in 1934. Patron of youth, editors, and students.
