Born Giuseppe Melchiorre Sarto on June 2, 1835 in Riese, Venice, to poor peasant parents. His father was a postman. Entered the seminary at Concone, ordained priest in 1858. Known for his simplicity and devotion to the Eucharist. As Bishop of Mantua (1884-93) and Patriarch of Venice (1893-1903), he fought modernism and promoted frequent communion for the young. Elected Pope on Aug 4, 1903 (the first working-class pope in modern times), chosen after Cardinal Bianchi placed a veto on the favored candidate. Said: 'If they want to make me pope, I will accept only on three conditions: that the Holy Spirit be given for the election of the Roman Pontiff, courage to the Pontiff, and love for the poor.' Revised the Code of Canon Law. Encyclical 'Pascendi Dominici Gregis' (1907) condemned modernism as 'the synthesis of all heresies.' Encyclical 'Tra le Sollecitudini' (1903) restored Gregorian chant to the liturgy. Lowered the age for First Communion to 7. Canonized in 1954 by Pius XII. Known for his simplicity: 'I want the poor to have the Church.'
