β Biography
ROBERT BELLARMINE (St) Bp. Dr. S.J. R.M. May 13 1542-1621 (Sept. 17). Born at Montagnana, he was educated by the Jesuits and joined that Society in 1560. As a young man he held professorships of Greek, Hebrew and theology. It was at Louvain that he first made his reputation as a controversialist, and from that time onward his pen and voice were busy in defence of Catholic doctrine against its Protestant opponents. He was created cardinal in 1598 and archbishop of Capua in 1602. Recalled to Rome in 1605, he became head of the Vatican library and theological adviser to the popes. He was canonized in 1930 and declared a Doctor of the Church the following year.

π Treatise on the Roman Pontiff
On the Authority of the Pope
The Roman Pontiff is the visible head of the Church, the successor of Peter, the vicar of Christ on earth. He has the fullness of power, the keys of the kingdom, the authority to bind and loose. He is the teacher of the faithful, the judge of controversies, the guardian of the faith.

On Christ the Messiah
Jesus Christ is the Messiah foretold by the prophets. He is the Son of God, the Son of Man, the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world. He is the good shepherd who lays down His life for His sheep. He is the bread of life, the light of the world, the way, the truth, and the life.
