β Biography
Born c.1245-1246 at Grottammare, Umbria, Italy, to noble parents. Entered the Augustinian order at age 13. Known for extreme asceticismβwearing a hair shirt, fasting, and sleeping on the ground. Ordained priest in 1266. Became a renowned preacher and confessor. In 1281, during the siege of Maenza by Saracen pirates, he prayed and the enemy fleet was destroyed by a stormβattributed to his intercession. Known for bilocation and prophetic visions. Wrote the 'Book of Celestial Wisdom' (lost). Died Sep 10, 1305 at age 60. Canonized in 1446 by Nicholas V (who took his name). One of the most popular saints of the late Middle Ages, especially among sailors and soldiers. Patron of sailors, soldiers, and lost things.

Nicholas of Tolentino's cult spread rapidly across medieval Europe. His 973 recorded miracles make him one of the most 'miraculous' saints in history. The Servite Order he served remains active today.
