✝ Biography
Born Jean-Baptiste De Veuster on Jan 2, 1840 in Tremelo, Belgium. Entered the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary at 18. Ordained priest in 1863. Volunteered for missionary work in Hawaii. In 1873, Bishop Apt offered him the assignment to Molokai—a leper colony to which the Hawaiian government had banished all leprosy patients. Few priests would go; those who did fled. Damien stayed. He built churches, schools, hospitals, and housing for the 800+ exiled patients. Learned to prepare medicine, perform surgeries, and administer last rites. Lived among the patients, sharing their food and conditions. Eventually contracted leprosy himself—whether from patient contact or pre-existing condition is debated. Refused to leave even as his body failed. Said: 'I am a leper myself; I cannot go away.' Died Apr 15, 1889 at age 49. Beatified in 1988, canonized in 2009 by Benedict XVI. Patron of leprosy sufferers and outcasts.
