✝ Biography
Born Catherine Benincasa on March 25, 1347 in Siena, Tuscany, the 25th child of a wool-dyer. From age 6 she had visions of Christ and made a private vow of virginity. At 16 she joined the Third Order of St Dominic (Mantellate). Known for extreme asceticism—she fasted severely and wore hair shirts. At 33 she emerged from seclusion to serve the sick during plague and engage in public ministry. Became spiritual director to Popes Urban V and Gregory XI, successfully persuading them to move the papacy from Avignon back to Rome in 1377. Wrote over 380 letters and her masterpiece, the 'Dialogues of Divine Providence,' in which Christ himself spoke to her about God's mercy, the Eucharist, and the Church. Received the stigmata in 1375. Died April 29, 1380 in Rome at age 33, while praying for Pope Urban VI during civil war. Canonized in 1461. Doctor of the Church (1970). Patron of Italy and Europe.
