✝ Biography
Born Francesco Forgione on May 25, 1887 in Pietrelcina, Italy. Entered the Capuchin Franciscan order in 1903, taking the name Pio (after Pope St Pius V). Ordained priest in 1910. During World War I served as military chaplain. On Sept 6, 1918 (or Oct 1903), he received the stigmata—the wounds of Christ's Passion—which remained visible for 50 years until his death. Also possessed gifts of bilocation, levitation, prophecy, and healing. Founded the Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Rosary at San Giovanni Rotondo in 1924, which grew into a major pilgrimage center with a hospital (House for the Relief of Suffering). Despite his holiness, he was investigated by the Vatican Secret Service three times for alleged fraud and his stigmata were closely studied by medical commissions. Pope Pius XI told him: 'You are an angel.' Pope John XXIII said: 'Your holiness is above suspicion.' Died Sept 23, 1968. Canonized in 2002 by Pope John Paul II. Patron of health care workers.
