✝ Biography
JOHN of CAPISTRANO (St) C. O.F.M. R.M. March 28 1386-1456 (Oct. 28). A native of Capis- trano in the Abruzzi, he began life as a lawyer, and was made governor of Perugia in the Papal States. When he was thirty he was left a widower and became a Fran- ciscan and a life-long friend of St Bernard- inus of Siena. His whole religious life was spent as papal legate to various states, Palestine, Milan, France, Sicily, Austria, Bavaria, Poland, Bohemia, and Silesia. The most important was that to Bohemia, where his conduct in connection with the Hussite movement has been adversely criticized. St John was also instrumental in the heroic resistance of the Hungarians to the Turks. Canonized in 1724. Cf. Menzies — Ati. — Holw.

John of Capistrano's defense of Belgrade saved Europe from Ottoman conquest for another century. His preaching converted tens of thousands. He is one of the most powerful preachers in Church history.
