β Biography
Born Jan 6, 1412 at DomrΓ©my in Lorraine, France, daughter of peasant parents Jacques and Isabelle d'Ancel. Called 'the Maid of Orleans'βLa Pucelle. From age 13 she heard voices of St Michael, St Catherine, and St Margaret telling her to drive the English from France and have Charles VII crowned at Reims. In 1428 she traveled to Vaucouleurs and persuaded Captain Robert de Baudricourt to give her an escort to the Dauphin's court at Chinon. Recognized by Charles (who had disguised himself among his courtiers), she was given armor and an army. Lifted the siege of Orleans on May 8, 1429, turning the war. Led French forces to victories at Jargeau, Meung, Beaugency, and Patay. Charles VII was crowned at Reims on July 17, 1429, with Joan holding her banner beside him. Captured by Burgundians at Compiegne on May 23, 1430, sold to the English. Tried for heresy and witchcraft by an English-controlled church court at Rouen. Refused to wear women's clothing, relapsed into 'cross-dressing,' and was burned at the stake on May 30, 1431 at age 19. Rehabilitated in 1456 by Pope Callixtus III. Canonized in 1920 by Benedict XV. Patron of France.

On Her Mission
I want you all to know that I have done nothing in this matter without a revealed commission from our Lord. I have heard and see still voices which counsel me and tell me that I must go to the Dauphin, and that I shall recover the kingdom of France for him.
