Born Albino Luciani on Oct 17, 1912 in Canale d'Agordo, Italy. Ordained priest in 1935. Appointed Bishop of Belluno-Feltre in 1958, Archbishop of Venice in 1969, Cardinal in 1969. Participated in Vatican II. Elected Pope on Aug 26, 1978, taking the name John Paul I—the first pope to use this name. Known for his warmth, smile, and humility. Said: 'I want to be a simple curate of Rome.' Began reforming the Curia and announced plans for a synod on the Church in the modern world. Abolished the tradition of paying cardinals for attending conclave. Died Sep 28, 1978 after only 33 days as pope—possibly of a heart attack, though his sudden death in the empty Vatican apartment fueled speculation. Beatified in 2022 by Francis. Known as the 'Smiling Pope.' Beatification process opened by Pope Francis in 2013; currently a Servant of God.
