β Biography
Born Margaret Mary Alacoque on Jul 22, 1647 in Paray-le-Monial, Burgundy, France. Entered the Visitandine convent at Paray-le-Monial in 1671. From Dec 27, 1673, she received sixteen visions of Jesus, who revealed to her the devotion to His Sacred Heart. Jesus said: 'Behold the Heart which has loved men so much. Consider the insults and ingratitude with which it is repaid in the sacrament of love.' He asked her to promote worship of the Sacred Heart, including: Communion on first Fridays, Holy Hour on Thursdays, and the Feast of the Sacred Heart. Her superiors initially doubted her visions, but she persevered for 19 years. The devotion was approved by the Church and spread worldwide. The Sacred Heart became one of the most popular devotions in Catholicism. Died Oct 17, 1690 at age 43. Canonized in 1920 by Benedict XV.
