✝ Biography
Born Hilary c.310-315 AD at Poitiers, Gaul, to pagan patrician parents. Studied rhetoric and philosophy, married early, and had a daughter (later St Gertrude). Converted to Christianity and baptized c.350, possibly influenced by his wife's faith. Elected Bishop of Poitiers c.353—despite being a recent convert, the people insisted. Became the 'Athanasius of the West' for his defense of Nicene orthodoxy against Arianism. Exiled to Phrygia (356-360) by the Arian Emperor Constantius II. During exile he studied Greek theology and the Church Fathers, which deeply influenced his writing. Wrote 'De Trinity' (On the Trinity)—the first systematic Trinitarian theology in Latin, 'De Synodis,' and commentaries on Psalms and Matthew. Recalled from exile in 360, he restored Nicene faith in Gaul. Organized conferences at Beziers and Paris that converted Gallic bishops to orthodoxy. Died Jan 13-15, 367-368 AD. Doctor of the Church (1851).

Hilary saved Gaul from Arianism. His 'On the Trinity' shaped Western Trinitarian theology. He was the first Western Doctor of the Church to write on the Trinity in Greek.
