✝ Biography
Born in Ireland c.5th-7th century, daughter of an Irish king. Fled to Gheel, Belgium with her confessor after her father, a pagan, attempted to violate her following her mother's death. He pursued them, and when she refused his advances, he cut off her head. Her confessor carried her head and buried it where it fell. A spring and church arose at the site. Venerated from the 11th century onward as patroness against mental illness, madness, and sexual assault. Her feast is May 15. The town of Gheel developed a unique tradition of caring for the mentally ill in family homes, a practice lasting centuries, attributed to her intercession.
