Born Eugenio Maria Giuseppe Giovanni Pacelli on Mar 2, 1876 in Rome. Entered the diplomatic service, serving as nuncio to Germany (1929-29-1939). Negotiated the Reichskonkordat with Hitler in 1933. Elected Pope on Mar 2, 1939, days before WWII began. During the war, he sheltered Jews in Vatican buildings, the Lateran, and Catholic institutions across Rome. The Vatican City hid over 800 Jews in the Castel Gandolfo. Used radio broadcasts to condemn the war's atrocities without naming Nazis explicitly (to protect victims). After the war, he authorized the release of documentation on Nazi crimes. Encyclicals: 'Mysticum Corporis' (Mystical Body of Christ, 1943), 'Mediator Dei' (on liturgy, 1947). Defined the Dogma of the Assumption in 1950. Died Oct 9, 1958. Beatified in 2000 by Pope John Paul II. Canonization process ongoing. He was ordained as a priest in 1904 and elected Pope on March 2, 1939, serving until his death in 1958.
