β Biography
Born Zelie Alexandrine GuΓ©rin on Jul 31, 1831 in Verneuil-sur-Avre, Normandy, France. Married Louis Martin in 1857. The couple had five daughters, two of whom became St. Therese of Lisieux and St. Pauline of Lisieux. Zelie was known for her deep faith, generosity, and commitment to living the Gospel radically. She and Louis practiced daily Mass, Confession, and strict observance of Sunday. Gave away much of their wealth to the poor and Church. Died of tuberculosis on Nov 28, 1877 at age 46, just two weeks before her 20th wedding anniversary. On her deathbed she said: 'If God wills it, we shall be reunited as a family in heaven.' Canonized in 2015 by Pope Francis alongside her husband Louis Martinβthe first married couple canonized together.
