Born Angelo Roncalli on Nov 25, 1881 in Sotto il Monte, Italy, son of peasant farmers. Entered the seminary at Seminario di Bergamo, ordained priest in 1904. Served as diplomat in Bulgaria, Greece, and Turkey. During World War II, as apostolic delegate to France (1944-53), he helped save Jews and resistants from the Nazis. Made Archbishop of Milan in 1954—the first non-cardinal to hold that see in centuries. Elevated to cardinal in 1958. Elected Pope on Oct 28, 1958, at age 76, unexpectedly chosen as a stopgap pope. Instead, he convened the Second Vatican Council (1962-65), which opened the windows of the Church to the modern world. Introduced the term 'aggiornamento' (updating). Addressed the General Audience as 'Carissimi' (dearest ones) instead of 'Reverendissimi.' Wrote the encyclical 'Pacem in Terris' on universal peace. Died on June 3, 1963 of gastric cancer. Beatified in 2000 by John Paul II, canonized in 2014. Known as the 'Good Pope' for his warmth, humility, and smile.
