Born Mariana de Jesus de Paredes y Flores on Sep 21, 1618 in Quito, Ecuador (then Viceroyalty of Peru). From childhood she showed extraordinary piety and desire for religious life. Entered the Third Order of St Dominic. Suffered from severe illness for most of her adult lifeβchronic pain, fever, and weaknessβyet bore it with heroic patience. Experienced mystical visions, including levitation and the stigmata. Known for her love of the Eucharist and devotion to the Passion. Her room became a pilgrimage site in Quito. Died Aug 11, 1634 at age 16. Beatified in 1854, canonized in 1950 by Pius XII. Patron of Ecuador and the young.
