✝ Biography
GEMMA GALGANI (St) V. A.C. Apr. 11 1878-1908. Born at Camigliano, near Lucca, in Tuscany. Her mother died when she was seven years old, and from that time her life was one of domestic trials and intense suffering both spiritual and physical. Through it all, however, she remained at peace and was the subject of various extraordinary supernatural phenomena — visions, ecstasies, revela- tions, supernatural knowledge, visible in- tercourse with her guardian angel, proph- ecy, miracles, and above all the periodi- cally recurring stigmata between 1899 and 1901. She was directed by the Passionist fathers. Her physical infirmities pre- vented her becoming a Passionist nun, as she ardently desired. She died on Holy Saturday. Beatified in 1933 and canon- ized in 1940, in the teeth of strong oppo- sition based on the extraordinary nature of her religious experiences.
